Its very easy to see what inspired, A Rocket to the Blasted Moon, Jules Vern, simply put. As a Child I would adore watching 20,000 leagues under the sea and the other classics that were adapted to Movies. I do think that being severely dyslexic has worked in my advantage here, as I have seen TV and film adaptations of my favourite writers while never reading the books. I know that doesn’t sound like a good thing, but it has allowed me to be inspired by their stories without copying their writing styles, forcing me to develop a writing style that is unique to me. If I was able to read without experiencing a level of pain akin to being water boarded, I think I might have ended up as a bit of a clone of other writers, rather than having a style of my own.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful kick in the pants of too serious sci-fi

I love Simon Carr books and this book is no exception. The author has a way of writing that lampoons nearly every aspect of a fiction type. The characters in this book are the perfect archetype of a late 1800’s sci-fi story. The world building has a wonderful naïveté that reminds me of a Jules Verne story. The plot has some wonderful twists that greatly add to the hilarity. But most importantly the author doesn’t take himself too seriously. It was a really enjoyable book that took me back to when I first read Jules Verne and his contemporaries. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a palate cleanser from the standard fare.
